Transforming Theme Park Loyalty into a Live Testing Lab

Scope: Design Leadership, Rapid Product Strategy, Context-Aware UX Architecture
Tools: Apple Wallet & Smartwatch APIs, Geo-Fencing, LLM Data Synthesis
Platform: iOS, Android, Wearables, Location-Aware Micro-Apps

Results: High-Velocity C-Suite Proof of Concept; Reduced Engineering Risk via Isolated A/B Testing

Drowning in "Cognitive Explosion"

Disneyland’s 350,000+ Magic Key holders generate over $1B annually and represent the park’s most frequent, tech-savvy guests. Yet the existing mobile app treated them like first-time tourists—forcing them to navigate complex, high-click menus in the middle of crowded, chaotic walkways. Theme parks are sensory battlegrounds; when a guest navigating crowds, parking, and family needs to hunt through nested screens just to scan a pass, mental fatigue sets in and digital engagement drops.

Designing by Guest State

Instead of building another bloated menu, I designed a context-aware application strategy centered around three distinct human states. At Home, the UI captures upfront planning and pre-sale revenue. At the Front Gate, the layout automatically elevates high-contrast barcodes for instantaneous scanning. Once In-Park, manual menu hunting vanishes entirely—replaced by a zero-click, geo-triggered interface that surfaces relevant offers (like a discount at a low-wait dining spot nearby) right when the guest is in position to enjoy them.

A Sandbox for Innovation

By integrating pass metadata into native Apple Wallet and smartwatch APIs, we unlocked frictionless "Tap ID" access at turnstiles and registers without forcing guests to open a full app. The resulting framework turned this high-intent loyalty cohort into a risk-free "Live Testing Lab"—allowing the Technology group to safely test emerging interaction models before scaling to millions of general guests. It proved that by respecting a guest’s attention capital in the physical world, you drive higher engagement and spontaneous in-park conversion.
